What We Did in 2016 – A Round Up

2016 was a great year for the team with lots of inspirational talks, events, our craft party and the super successful Etsy Made Local Market  at the Dome.

In February we held our first ever Samples Seconds and Supply sale at the Komdeia. We opened the doors at 11am to a bustle of customers ready to get their hands on some handmade bargains. 30 sellers took part selling a range of sample and second products from jewellery, prints, homeware, clothing and one off items.

As part of the May Open Houses Unlimited Design and Gift shop teamed up with the Brighton Etsy Team to create a two week show – showcasing a curated collection of 12 members of the team. There was a great range of vibrant prints, jewellery, ceramics, textiles and homeware. Sellers included InTheMakingMade, Hello DODO, Designosaur, rockcakes, ilikecats,  jureambox, mooshpie and more too.

In June we hosted our 4th Craft Party and were determined to make it bigger and better than the last, we had workshops including weaving with Peas and Needles, Fimo with Letterbox Kits, Paper garlands with Fleur de Carotte, felt brooches with Planes workshop and more. There was cake and sweets a plenty and lots of games to play as well as a craft materials swap.

Throughout 2016 we’ve hosted 5 talks at The Old Market. We covered everything from starting up your business, how to protect your  IP, avoiding burn out, how a crazy idea for a project can turn into something really amazing, the ins and outs of Instagram and whether to hashtag or not, back to business basics with who your ideal customers are, the world of wholesale, managing content and how to cope with your inner critic.
Guest speakers were Alice Tams of Birds in hats, Ebonie Allard, Aiden Saunders of Print Wagon, an Instagram panel Q&A with Vktorija from Andsmile Studio, Georgie St Claire and Toby from i like cats. Ending this year’s talks was Lola Hoad. Thanks to all the speakers for giving us lots to think about  and thanks to all that attended.

Back in the summer we also had a stall at March of the Mermaids where our team created marine themed products with a percentage of each of the sales going to the WCA to help save the whales and marine creatures. Our team members also added these products to their shops and a percentage of all sales of those products over the last 5 months will be donated to the WCA – we’ll have a full round up post on this next week once the totals are in!

As you all know to end the year we held our biggest and best Brighton Etsy Made Local Christmas Market to date. Held at Brighton Dome it featured 70 stalls and drew in crowds of visitors who came to support our makers and shop handmade this Christmas. Read our full round up of our Christmas Market here.

We look forward to all 2017 has in store for our team!
