As you may know Brighton Open houses happens in may and we are running an unofficial Etsy trail, the map for witch can be found here, we thought you might like to be introduced to some of the sellers so we sent them over a few questions, first up is Lisa and her shop StoatsWeasels.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your etsy shop….
I’m Lisa Bamford, and I work under the name of Stoats & Weasels in Brighton. I create silly, colourful, and sometimes romantic, designs for gift packs of button badges and fridge magnets, greetings cards, mugs, mirrors and screenprints. The badges and magnets are made on my trusty badge making machine at home, and I produce my screen prints at Ink Spot Press in Brighton.
I’ve always dabbled in creating designs outside of my work, but the last couple of years is when I’ve been making more time to do it in a more in depth way. I really enjoy my day job being a graphic designer, but I also enjoy the creative freedom that making my own work brings and being able to express myself though it. I love it when my work makes people smile too, I think that’s what I like best.
What has your experience of the Brighton Open houses been before this year?
This will be the fifth year doing Open House and although it’s a lot of hard work in the preparation we always enjoy it. We have to pack a lot of our belongings and furniture away so it’s quite odd living in a gallery for a month, plus we get around 2500 visitors coming through our flat over the four weekends, so sometimes we have to fight to get into our own home!
What can an eager visitor expect when visiting your Open House?
We’ve got a great group of 11 talented artists (including seven Brighton Etsy sellers) showing a wide variety of work including jewellery, illustration, paper cuts, photograph, printmaking, graphic art and ceramics. And possibly most importantly, we have tea and cake in our (usually) sunny garden.
Do you have any new products or best sellers in store for us?
I’ve got some new prints and other products ready for this year, plus some of the old favourites such as my ever popular pooing bear print.
Apart from your obviously fantastic Open House, are there any others you’re looking forward to visiting or have particularly enjoyed in the past?
Have you got any other crafty plans for this summer?
I’ve got prints and cards in an eight week show in Brighton’s Fishing Quarter Gallery which is running until the end of May. Then I’ll start thinking about doing more designs for prints to get ready for Christmas markets and next year’s Open House… you can never be too prepared :o)
